6.25" Square Cherry and Walnut with Curly Maple Stripes
Wood Species Used:
- The contrasting dark brown stripes displayed in this piece are Walnut or also known as Black Walnut. Walnut is commonly found throughout the Eastern United States. Its heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks but can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast.
- The beautiful white stripes are made from Curly Maple. Curly Maple is not actually a species, but simply a description of a figure in the grain—it occurs most often in soft maples but is also seen in hard maples. It is so called because the ripples in the grain pattern create a three-dimensional effect that appears as if the grain has “curled” along the length of the board. It is not completely clear what environmental conditions (if any) cause this phenomenon and It is relatively uncommon however the curl adds a unique dimension unfound in other maples making it significantly more desirable.
- The light brown edge stripes on the edge are made of Cherry, also known as American Cherry. This refers to the “common cherry tree” found in the eastern united states. Its heartwood is commonly a light pinkish brown and eventually darkening with time and upon exposure to light.
